Stepping into the nondescript storefront in a Helmo Avenue strip mall offers a bit of a surprise: The space, with a jukebox, pool table, concession stand, stage and a dance floor is set for a party. One thing, however, is conspicuously absent. Behind the bar are coffeemakers, snacks and sodas, but no liquor. The Spirit of Sobriety (SOS) Club is an alcohol-free venue. Founded in 1981, the nonprofit was originally called the Camel Club. Owner Ken Douglas said after he quit using drugs and alcohol in 1974, he was looking for substance-free ways to have fun.
