Oakdale Dunn Bros regulars Marty and Ellen Kahn used play chess on the coffee shop's public computer, allowing other patrons to join if they were interested. One day they decided they'd like to turn game-playing at the shop into an event. Marty Kahn presented Carol Trombley, one of the owners of the coffee shop, with an idea to hold a game day, where patrons could come, play games, socialize and drink coffee. A barista at the coffee shop who once frequented a Chicago coffee shop that offered Scrabble Sunday convinced Trombley to give the idea a chance, she said. Dreamcoat Coffee is open, and an adjoining boutique is slated to open soon.
The business of building community centers isn't new to The Salvation Army, but the organization is trying to do it in a new way in Oakdale. The coffee shop side of the organization's first coffee shop/boutique opened in September at 6060 50th St.—the space formerly occupied by Mrs. B's Coffee—and the boutique is slated to open in January. "A coffee house has developed into a place of community in today's day and age," said Salvation Army program specialist Lars Carlson, who manages Dreamcoat Coffee along with his wife Kristin Carlson.
