Years of Service: Oakdale Honors Firefighters

The firefighters were recognized during a May 17 awards ceremony.

Several members of the Oakdale Fire Department were acknowledged for years of service to the department during an annual awards event held on May 17. 5 years: Captain Joe Carpentier, Firefighter Robert Fauske, Firefighter Tim Wessels 10 years: Firefighter Erik Hansen 15 years: Firefighter Mark Sottile, Firefighter Ken Mauston 20 years: Deputy Chief Kevin Wold In addition, two retiring members were honored for years of service. Crews Put Out Dryer Fire at Oakdale Nail Salon

The call came in at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, May 16.

In what Oakdale Fire Chief Jeff Anderson called a “minor incident,” crews Thursday afternoon put out a dryer fire at First Nails. The fire was contained to the dryer, but smoke did spread throughout the establishment, Anderson said. Oakdale Family Displaced by Fire is ‘Starting Over,’ Skyview Looks to Help

A benefit for the Vang family, whose townhome collapsed during a fire last month, is set for May 14 at the Oakdale school.

The Oakdale family whose townhome was destroyed by fire last month “pretty much lost everything,” according to Deanna Wuotila, a fifth-grade teacher at Skyview Elementary. The school is hoping to change that. A May 14 benefit is planned at Skyview to assist the Vang family, one of several displaced by the April 9 fire on Hillvale Avenue North. The Vangs are currently living with other family members, said Wuotila, who actually has three children from the seven-unit townhome complex in her classroom. “I feel really passionate about helping these families out,” she said. While all the families were affected by the blaze, the Vangs are “starting over,” Wuotila said, adding that Hope Church in Oakdale is also working to assist the families. …

Two Grass Fires Break Out on I-94

The Woodbury Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish both.

The Woodbury Fire Department was able to extinguish two grass fires that broke out along Interstate 94 on Tuesday afternoon. The first call came in at about 12:30 p.m., and the second fire was going by the time crews arrived, said Michelle Okada, Public Safety spokeswoman. Both fires, which sent plumes of smoke in the air and prompted several emergency calls, were on the north side of the freeway, she said. One was west of Inwood Avenue (Radio Drive). The other was about a quarter mile east near Interstate 694, Okada said. Firefighters were able to extinguish both by about 12:50 p.m., and crews were gone by about 1 p.m. It’s unclear at this point what started the fires, or if one started the other, Okada said.   Like us on Facebook | …

Snapshot: Controlled Burn in Oakdale

Crews on Saturday morning conducted a controlled burn at a house in Oakdale.

The smoke over Oakdale skies Saturday morning came from a controlled house burn as part of a training exercise, according to a Washington County dispatcher.
