Tartan Girls Hockey Defeats North 2-1

Great goaltending by Margaret Straka helps the Titans prevail over the Polars Friday night at Tartan.

In a game with plenty of scoring opportunities and shots on goal, it was great goaltending by both teams that kept the game closely contested to the final seconds. The Tartan Titans Girls Hockey team faced off at home Friday against the North Polars in a game that was won by the Titans 2-1. The terrific play of Tartan goalie Margaret Straka started early in the game with five fast saves during a North powerplay. However another penalty by Tartan, at the 14 minute mark, led to the first goal of the game being scored by Emily Furlong of North. The first period ended with two penalties on North giving the Titans a two player advantage which they were unable to capatilize on. The shots of the first period were even at 9 but North held a 1-0 …

Tartan Girls Hockey Shuts Out Minneapolis

Titans dominate Novas on Wednesday night at Tartan Arena.

Fresh off an overtime victory at Henry Sibley last Friday, the Tartan girls hockey team had a much easier time of it on Wednesday night at home with a 4-0 victory over the Minneapolis Novas. "I was very happy with how tonight's game went," Titans head coach Jeff Lanz said. "We played a complete game instead of just putting together two good periods and that was nice." Tartan recorded the only goal it would require for the win as defender Chelsea Regan logged an unassisted score at 12:53 of the first period. Regan's tally would stand as the only goal of the game until early in the third period. "The kids stepped up in the third period," Lanz said. "We were out-shooting (the Novas) more than two-to-one, but still just had that one-goal lead…

Holiday Miracle: Titan girls beat Sibley in OT

Dominated for much of the game at Henry Sibley, the Tartan girls' hockey team got a last-second win in overtime on Friday.

Perhaps it's a lesson to remember during the holiday season, but the Tartan girls' hockey team proved on Friday that it's never too late for a miracle. Dominated for much of their game at Henry Sibley, the Titans managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat when Andrea Heller scored with just 7.8 seconds left in overtime for a 3-2 win. It was especially sweet for the Titans, who had been soundly beaten in their last game, to bounce back with a win. "To get throttled by Hill-Murray 10-zip, that hurt pretty bad and the kids were pretty down, but the resiliency and the bounce back these kids have, they never quit," said Titans coach Jeff Lanz. The Warriors led 1-0 early on a goal by Kaleigh Kramer, but Tartan would tie it up before the …

Tartan's Heller, Anitzberger Lead Titans Over Spartans

A potent Titans offense helped overcome defensive mistakes in 4-1 home win over Richfield.

The Tartan girls varsity hockey team beat conference foe Richfield 4-1 on Friday night in a game that showcased a Titans offense that was at times unrelenting. Three of Tartan's goals came in the final three minutes of the first period after a breakaway opportunity from senior captain Andrea Heller was denied with 3:20 left. Tartan seventh-grader Marissa Anitzberger scored the Titans' first goal 14 seconds later. A second goal from sophomore Chloe Wickerman and another from Anitzberger capped off the first-period scoring for the Titans. The Richfield Spartans, however, were not about to go quietly into the night. Richfield junior Alyson Niesen scored the team's first and only goal with 43 seconds left in the first period. Tartan's …
