Two Grass Fires Break Out on I-94

The Woodbury Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish both.

The Woodbury Fire Department was able to extinguish two grass fires that broke out along Interstate 94 on Tuesday afternoon. The first call came in at about 12:30 p.m., and the second fire was going by the time crews arrived, said Michelle Okada, Public Safety spokeswoman. Both fires, which sent plumes of smoke in the air and prompted several emergency calls, were on the north side of the freeway, she said. One was west of Inwood Avenue (Radio Drive). The other was about a quarter mile east near Interstate 694, Okada said. Firefighters were able to extinguish both by about 12:50 p.m., and crews were gone by about 1 p.m. It’s unclear at this point what started the fires, or if one started the other, Okada said.   Like us on Facebook | …

Washington County Board Discusses Gateway Corridor Transit Project

Members of the Gateway Corridor Commission addressed concerns of mass transit opponents at last week's Washington County Board meeting.

Plans to update the I-94 "Gateway Corridor" with some form of high-speed mass transit from St. Paul into western Wisconsin were discussed at last week's Washington County Board meeting, according to a Woodbury Bulletin article by Riham Feshir.  According to the Gateway Corridor Commission website: After extensive analysis and considerable public involvement from business leaders and residents in the community, the Gateway Corridor Commission identified two options – a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and a Light Rail Transit (LRT) line along Hudson Road from St. Paul to Woodbury – as the best options for the region.   At the board meeting last week, residents voiced concerns about how the project would affect current bus schedules they …

Man Returns to Interstate 94 Overpass to Mark 11th 9/11 Anniversary

Hudson business owner and philanthropist Paul Rode is spending 24 hours waving the American flag on the Stagecoach Trail overpass over I-94 to help passing motorists remember the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Paul Rode, then a restaurant manager at Barker's Bar & Grill, was so moved by the events that he went to Walmart, bought an American flag and began waving it on a freeway overpass. Over the past 11 years, Rode has advanced in his career. He now owns The Agave Kitchen and Charlie's Barbershop & Shave. He still buys a flag every year and returns to an Interstate 94 overpass and spends time waving the flag to passing motorists. All 11 of his flags for the years 2001-2011 now hang in his garage. Just as he did last year, Rode and friends will wave flags on the Stagecoach Trail overpass over Interstate-94 for 24 hours. Firetrucks and EMS vehicles from area emergency services agencies are scheduled to drive past the flag …

Why Do Semis Keep Tipping at the Woodbury Cloverleaf?

MnDOT has studied the issue and considered reconstructing the Interstate 94-Interstate 694 interchange.

It happened again Sunday. A semi truck overturned on the cloverleaf from Interstate 694 to eastbound Interstate 94 in Woodbury. “Semis have been tipping over at that cloverleaf for years,” said Lt. Eric Roeske with the State Patrol. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has also taken note of the frequency of semis overturning and conducted studies of that cloverleaf, said Chad Erickson, a traffic specialist with MnDOT. “It’s that southbound loop that we have an issue with,” he said. While Erickson said the Woodbury cloverleaf isn’t the most used design, he attributed the problem more to the volume of traffic in that area and how trucks enter the ramp. “There’s a whole host of factors involved with (semis tipping),” he said. “It’s …

Obvious MnDOT could make a couple of inexpensive changes to reduce the rollovers. 1) Install a WARNING SIGN prior to the ramp directed at 18 wheelers. "Ramp To I94 Eastbound Has Been Known To Cause Rollovers". 2) Increase the banking of the ramp so trucks are less likely to roll over. Both of these changes would cost far less than the damage caused by one of these "frequent" rollovers. Of course …   more ›

UPDATED: Mechanical Problem Caused I-94 Car Fire

The car fire broke out Saturday afternoon on the north side of I-94 near Woodbury Drive.

A mechanical problem sparked a fire that led to a vehicle on Interstate 94 becoming engulfed in flames Saturday afternoon. It was an older car with about 180,000 miles on it, said Woodbury Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren. A teenager from Hudson, Wis., was driving the vehicle, which started smoking after being driven only a few miles, Wallgren said. There were three other teens in the car at the time and they all escaped unharmed, Wallgren said. They were on a scavenger hunt. The car was pulled over on the shoulder on the north side of I-94 near Woodbury Drive.
