Nicholas David of NBC's "The Voice" used to play music in Oakdale.
Nicholas David has been performing on hundreds of thousands of televisions across America for the past several weeks, but he used to sing for a much smaller crowd in Oakdale. Nicholas David, a contestant on NBC's hit TV show "The Voice" used to perform for the residents of Oak Meadows Senior Living in Oakdale. David — known for his "unique soulful style" — used to play piano and sing with his grandfather at Oak Meadows. "His grandma and grandpa lived at Oak Meadows and he used to come out here and play piano and sing, while his grampa played accordion and sang," said Oak Meadows Director of Community Relations Kim Utecht Prayfrock in an email to Oakdale Patch. Each piece of art on display in the Oakdale Discovery Center gallery this month has a special story to go along with it—a life story. Tenants at Oak Meadows Senior Living crafted clay tiles depicting their life stories, and they’re on display at the center through April. Hobbies, travels, loved ones, jobs, military service and personality traits are depicted in the tiles, and each one features a poster underneath with a photo of the artist and an explanation of their work.

One hundred and seven Up With People students from 19 countries are sweeping the east metro to participate in a variety of service projects and performances in Oakdale and Woodbury this week. Up With People, which was founded in 1965, is an international, educational non-profit organization with a focus on bringing the world together through service and music. Thirty-four students arrived at Oak Meadows Senior Living Center on Tuesday to paint benches and garden boxes, visit with residents and organize a fashion show.
