Community members and Tartan High School students delivered gifts to children and families in the area on Saturday.

Santa Claus, his elves and even Mrs. Claus were quite busy in Oakdale over the weekend.  Area community members dressed up as Santas and Mrs. Clauses and Tartan High School students dressed up as Santa's elves and drove throughout the Oakdale community to deliver presents to children and families in need in the community. This was part of Holiday Helping Hands — a program sponsored by the Oakdale Business and Professional Association to provide gifts to families in Oakdale and the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District.  The program has been going on for 21 years and has delivered gifts to more than 400 children in the past.  Like us on Facebook | Follow us on Twitter | Sign up for our newsletter

On June 7, the Oakdale Business and Professional Association hosted four lawmakers to discuss hot topics at an annual breakfast.

The Vikings stadium bill, the gay marriage amendment, Wisconsin’s recall election and the voter ID amendment. These were just some of the topics addressed by four state lawmakers that attended Oakdale Business and Professional Association’s annual Eggs and Breakfast discussion on June 7. Sen. Tedd Lillie, Sen. Chuck Wiger, Rep. Leon Lillie and Rep. Kathy Lohmer were part of a panel at the event held at Oak Marsh Golf Course. In total, about 45 people attended the public breakfast, including Rep. Volunteers Deliver Holiday Gifts to Oakdale-Area Families in Need

About 100 families got presents through the Oakdale Business and Professional Association's Holiday Helping Hands program this year.

Nine Santas and their elves gathered in Tartan High School’s cafeteria Saturday morning in preparation to deliver holiday gifts to about 100 local families—including about 400 kids—who might not otherwise have gotten any, said organizer John Larson. The effort—the Oakdale Business and Professional Association’s Holiday Helping Hands program—involved about 150 volunteers who purchased, wrapped and delivered the presents, Larson said. “It is an expression of the Oakdale Business and Professional Association’s vision for making a better, stronger community,” said Larson, senior pastor at Oakdale’s  Hope Church. “We have a vision for meeting a need, and there’s a need out there, so it’s a great combination.” Months of planning, preparation, …

Oakdale's Summerfest Medallion Hunt Expected to Continue

The organizer said he's heard from families who enjoy the annual hunt.

The Summerfest Medallion Hunt will likely take place again next year, said coordinator Larry Eberhard. Earlier this year, Eberhard sought feedback from the public on whether the hunt should continue, due to concerns about waning interest. Although he didn’t hear from a large number of people, he said, those who responded suggested that the hunt is serving its purpose—to get residents out to Oakdale parks they might not otherwise visit, and to give families a fun way to get involved in the community. “That whole family aspect has been a real core and foundational piece of it and these emails I have received have done nothing but provide further support for that,” Eberhard said. It’s an activity family members of all ages can do together, he…

Oakdale Mayor Carmen Sarrack announced the winning business at the community picnic Thursday.

Furlong’s Liquor was named the Oakdale Business and Professional Association’s Business of the Year for 2011, Mayor Carmen Sarrack announced at Oakdale’s community picnic Thursday, June 16, at Fire Hall No. 1. Furlong’s was chosen due to owner Terry Furlong’s extensive community involvement over the past 20 years, said business association president Rick Timm. “Almost every program we had, he was involved,” Timm said. “He was president of the board at one point, on the board at least a dozen years, and every event, he’s volunteered for, so it was well-deserved.” Furlong’s Liquor, located at 4777 Geneva Ave., opened 24 years ago, Terry Furlong said. At the business, they’ve always made community involvement high-priority, he said. “Being …

Entrepreneurial Roots Motivate Hope Church Pastor to Help Local Businesses

John Larson, Oakdale Volunteer of the Year, has worked to meet needs in the community and support local businesses.

John Larson practices what he preaches—literally. The 2010 Oakdale Volunteer of the Year, named Tuesday, is the senior pastor at Oakdale's Hope Church. Larson's volunteer efforts range from leading the Helping Hands program that provides Christmas presents for families in need to coaching for the Oakdale Athletic Association, but helping the city's small businesses has been a major focus of his.
