The Oakdale city council amended the city ordinance regarding animals and fowl at its Feb. 26 council meeting.
Dog owners will now have a designated spot for their dogs outside of the Oakdale Discovery Center since the city council recently amended its ordinance. According to city documents, several pet owners have been observed leaving their dogs tied to patio chairs at the entrance of the Oakdale Discovery Center when the owners have had to access the building. Other pet owners have brought their dogs inside the facility, which is not allowed. A dog post idea was submitted to the city's Innovation Committee. The suggestion asked the Public Works Department to install a small hitching post for owners to temporarily tie their pets to while they entered the building. Why visit an art gallery in the Twin Cities when there's one practically in your backyard? Each month, the work of a featured local artist or artisan is displayed at the Oakdale Discovery Center. The Oakdale Discovery Center featured Oakdale resident and artist Tom Flynn's work during the month of February, which included photography on canvas and gunpowder on masonite. "Tom's work is amazing," said Deb Ramsey of the Parks and Recreation Department. Starting March 1, the Discovery Center will feature the pastel paintings of St. Paul artist Mary Sazenski starting March 1. The indoor garage sale will be in the Oakdale Discovery Center.
It's almost time for the city's fourth annual indoor garage sale. Twenty-five individual sellers will fill the Oakdale Discovery Center for the annual indoor garage sale to sell clothes, books, home décor, toys and more. Doors will open promptly at 9 a.m. and the sale will run to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. Santa Claus came to Oakdale on Saturday and brought along Mrs. Claus and a few other surprises. The city of Oakdale held its Winter Wonderland event, which featured a petting zoo, sledding hill, hayrides, free breakfast and lunch, bonfire and smores, face painting and visits with Santa. The Winter Wonderland will be at the Oakdale Discovery Center on Saturday.
Baby, it's cold outside. And just in time for the city's Winter Wonderland event. It's been about 15 years since the first Winter Wonderland event in Oakdale, but it sure has changed since then, said Oakdale Recreation Superintendent Julie Williams. "When we started it was very small at the old Nature Center building," Williams said. "We probably had 100 people or so, and now it has evolved to more than 1,000 people." Williams said the free event is in its fifth year at the Oakdale Discovery Center. The second annual Indoor Market kicked off on Saturday.
The city's second annual Indoor Market began Saturday morning with both new and returning vendors. From jams and breads to vintage home items and books, the Indoor Market had more than enough options for local shoppers. The Indoor Market began in January last year, however, vendors requested to start the market early so people could shop for Christmas presents. The market will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on every other Saturday through March 16. It is held in the Oakdale Discovery Center. Thanks to a very special U.S. Postal Service program, "Santa" will reply to children who mail him their Christmas wish lists this holiday season.
Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." Instructions to send a letter from Santa: In Oakdale, letters to Santa can be dropped off at any post office location as well as the Santa mailbox at City Hall and the Discovery Center. Oakdale's Indoor Market will begin earlier than usual this year.
Oakdale is kicking off its second Indoor Market in time for some Christmas shopping. This year will feature more than 30 vendors at the Oakdale Discovery Center — up from last year's 20 participants. Approximately 80 percent of the vendors sell food items — including meats, baked goods, breads, syrups, jams and jellies, honey butter, candies, spices, salsas and strudels — while the rest sell jewelry, wooden toys, children's books and vintage home items, said Mike Anderson, the city's recreation coordinator. "It was enough of a success last year to have it again this year," Anderson siad. "The residents love the building and the vendors can't get over how great the venue is."
