Oakdale Fire Crews Respond to 'Significant' Woodbury Townhome Fire

Smoke was billowing from the windows of the townhome Tuesday afternoon in a “significant fire,” according to Woodbury Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren.

The Oakdale Fire Department assisted Woodbury crews in putting out a fire Tuesday afternoon at a townhome at the 8600 block of Quarry Ridge Lane. A laptop computer had been left running on a couch, sparking the blaze, said Woodbury Fire Cmdr. John Wallgren. “It was a significant fire,” he said. The call came in at 2:16 p.m. and crews arrived at the scene minutes later. Nobody was home at the time, and no firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. A neighbor called 911. The woman who lives at the townhome was at work. A neighbor told authorities the smell of smoke had been in the air since about 10 a.m., Wallgren said. Firefighters forced their way into the home, which suffered “extensive damage,” he said. “The home will not be …

Dangerous Fire Conditions Prompt Burning Ban in Oakdale, County Until Further Notice

The burning ban begins at 6 p.m. Friday and will continue until further notice.

Because fire danger is high to very high across major portions of the state due to continued drought conditions, the Fire Chiefs of Washington County is initiating a burning ban beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.  No camp or recreational fire or open burn will be permitted within Washington County during the period of the ban. No burning permits will be issued to the general public and no use of fireworks will be allowed. The ban will continue until further notice. The severe drought has brought wildfire conditions to the point that fires start easily from sparks or windblown embers and spread rapidly. Early Friday morning more than 100 firefighters — including Oakdale — responded to a house fire in Mahtomedi that destroyed one million-…

Fire Damages Million Dollar Homes in Mahtomedi

The Oakdale Fire Department was one of several fire departments that responded to the fire.

Area firefighters were kept busy putting out a fire that destroyed a million-dollar home in Mahtomedi and damaged two other nearby homes early Friday morning. Signs indicate the fire started on the deck of a home on the 200 block of Park Avenue and spread to nearby homes due to heavy winds, according to a report by Kare 11. The fire destroyed the home and caused significant damage to a second million-dollar home and minor damage to a third home, Kare 11 reports. No one was home at the first house that caught fire and neighbors made it out safely from the other two homes, according to CBS Minnesota. More than 100 firefighters in the area responded to the fire, including Oakdale's fire department.  Sign up for Oakdale Patch's free e-…

Oakdale Firefighters Try to Pass the Test

The Oakdale Fire Department has an annual ability test that each firefighter must pass.

Oakdale firefighters have a lot to do in less than 10 minutes.  Earlier this week the Oakdale Fire Department underwent its annual ability test at Station 2 near City Hall. Firefighters have 10 minutes to complete 10 different scenarios that mimic real-life firefighting situations.  The firefighters' vitals are checked before and after the test to help determine how the firefighters are doing during the physical challenges. Challenges include donning fire gear, crawling, carrying a fan, draging a hose line, raising a ladder, climbing stairs with a hose bundle, a rope hoist and chopping, among other exercises. The fire department's Health and Safety Committee — made up of Oakdale firefighters — issues the test each year. If a firefighter …
