District 622 Elementary School Students Display Their Research Work

Students from throughout the district in the elementary schools' SAIL program gathered at Skyview Community School Tuesday for a research fair.

Elementary school third- through fifth-graders in the SAIL program (Students Accelerated in Learning) from throughout District 622 got together in the Skyview Community School media center Tuesday night for a research fair. At the fair, third-graders displayed brochures they made on a city of their choice, fourth-graders showed off posters they had created about a historical figure who was a person of color or female and fifth-graders chose from a variety of presentation formats—including board games and PowerPoint presentations—to convey their research on any topic of their choice. Oakdale Elementary Host to Biggest-Ever SAIL Inventions Fair

School District 622 has around 250 kids enrolled in its program for promising young scholars.

This year's inventions fair for District 622 elementary school students Dec. 10 at Oakdale Elementary School was bigger than ever. New this year, students in the district's Students Accelerated in Learning (SAIL) program were required to participate, said Stephanie Clark, SAIL teacher for Oakdale elementary schools. "In the past we let the kids choose, but this year we wanted to push them," she said. "We wanted to see what they could come up with." The students didn't disappoint, coming up with a wide variety of inventions requiring skill and ingenuity to build. The entry from 8-year-old Jonathan Acuna, a third-grader at Oakdale Elementary, was one of the night's biggest hits. Acuna's 'Haunted Jewel Hunt' is a board game that requires …
