The joint enterprise wasn’t making enough money, according to a Salvation Army spokesperson.
The Salvation Army closed both its Oakdale boutique and Dreamcoat Coffee last month. “It just wasn’t able to make enough money to run, even break even,” said Annette Bauer, Salvation Army spokeswoman. Both Dreamcoat and the Salvation Army boutique, the first of its kind in the area, closed April 20. Related: Oakdale’s Dreamcoat Coffee to Close “We had lovely, very loyal core group of people,” Bauer said. The hope was that higher-end items would be donated at the boutique, helping sustain both entities, Bauer said. “It just wasn’t working for us,” she said. Bauer did laud the Carlsons for their work at Dreamcoat and the “hard work, ingenuity and creativity” of those involved with the joint enterprise. The coffee shop opened in late 2010, …

Some local business owners spoke against the site, but the city council unanimously approved the project.
Oakdale is getting another Caribou Coffee shop. The city council unanimously approved the site plan and variance for the new coffee shop, which will be located at the intersection of Highway 36 and Century Avenue. The city council's decision follows the Planning Commission's unanimous approval of the site plan and variance. The new 1,706 square foot Caribou site will be located at 6014 Highway 36. The city council also approved Caribou's request for an 8-foot variance to the 10-foot required parking lot setback located on the southern property line. The variance pushes the building and parking lot south to allow for an emergency bypass lane and exit for traffic north of the drive-thru lane. The coffee shop will replace an old Kwik Stop …

Dreamcoat Coffee is open, and an adjoining boutique is slated to open soon.
The business of building community centers isn't new to The Salvation Army, but the organization is trying to do it in a new way in Oakdale. The coffee shop side of the organization's first coffee shop/boutique opened in September at 6060 50th St.—the space formerly occupied by Mrs. B's Coffee—and the boutique is slated to open in January. "A coffee house has developed into a place of community in today's day and age," said Salvation Army program specialist Lars Carlson, who manages Dreamcoat Coffee along with his wife Kristin Carlson. Gathering places are needed in this time when more people are spending time alone in front of their computer or television, Carlson said.
