A Tartan High School student received a high-ranking leadership position for SkillsUSA.
A Tartan High School student will be serving as a state officer for SkillsUSA, according to a recent release. Maggie Mielzarek recently went through specialized training and interviewing skills to be selected as Secondary Vice-President for Minnesota SkillsUSA. She was previously chosen in December to serve as a state officer at large, but after more training moved up to a higher position. SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization that serves teachers, high school students and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. Tartan Senior Nicole Horwath isn’t wasting any time in charting her career path.
Oakdale Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Nicole Horwath, 12th Grade School: Tartan High School Accomplishment: Horwath was elected to a position as a state officer in SkillsUSA, an extracurricular program focusing on career preparation. Key to Awesomeness: This might make her unique among fellow teenagers, but Tartan senior Nicole Horwath likes rules. She likes them so much, in fact, that she’s hoping her role on the state’s SkillsUSA board is that of parliamentarian. Horwath was elected to a position on the board after planning and executing a campaign complete with manager and motto—Shine like Gold. Oakdale Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: The Tartan High School SkillsUSA Team Accomplishment: The team brought back 22 medals and five national qualifiers from the state meet in late March. Key to Awesomeness: In its first year sending a group to state competition, Tartan’s SkillsUSA team has set the bar high for future teams, said advisor Jenny Murphy. While many students don’t begin career exploration until after they graduate high school or start college, through SkillsUSA, these students are already learning about careers like nursing, auto mechanics, law enforcement and technical math.
