Tartan High School Relay for Life Begins Friday

The event raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Last year, Tartan High School student Jason Telin raised $500 for the local Relay for Life. In November 2012, his grandfather was diagnosed with brain cancer. This year he has raised $1,400 for the event. The Relay for Life of Tartan High School is set for Friday, May 17. It’s year 11 for the event, which asks teams to walk relay-style around the track at high school in Oakdale to raise money for the American Cancer Society. At the 10-year mark, the local Relay for Life had raised about $1 million, said Christine Telin, Jason’s mom, who serves as a chaperone. So far this year, the 53 teams of 683 participants—mostly Tartan High School students—have raised more than $101,000. The local event is typically in the top five per capita in the …

Shows begin this weekend at the high school.

Tartan High School’s theater department will present several performances of Peter Pan, starting Friday. The musical shows are set for: From an event description on Oakdale Patch: Sir James Barrie's timeless tale of the boy who never grew up is reborn as a musical spectacular. As the lights over Wendy, John and Michael Darling's beds go out and the nursery of their London townhouse is thrown into darkness, a small light bounces across their nursery. Tartan Theatre to Present Musical Rendition of ‘Peter Pan’

Shows will run April 12 through April 21.

The Tartan High School theater program will present Peter Pan the musical next month. Performances will be held in the Tartan High School auditorium, 828 Greenway Ave. N., in Oakdale. Residents are encouraged to “check out the high-flying action and adventure” during several upcoming shows: Also, there will be a dinner theater performance at 5 p.m. on April 19, catered by Tinucci’s. Tickets for that show cost $25 for adults, $23 for senior citizens and $16 for students. For the other shows, tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $6 for students. First Student-Run Postal Credit Union in Minnesota Opens at Tartan High School

Students at Tartan High School will be running a Postal Credit Union branch out of their school store. The new branch's ribbon cutting was held Wednesday morning.

Tartan High School is the home of Minnesota's first student-run Postal Credit Union. On Feb. 20, the representatives of the Postal Credit Union (PCU), Tartan students, school faculty and community members gathered to celebrate the opening the PCU Student Credit Union.  This is the third student credit union branch that has opened in a Minnesota high school, but it is the first that will be run by students, said Craig Spreiter, a marketing teacher at the high school. "I don't think there is another branch that is so student-driven," Spreiter said.  Spreiter dreamed of a student PCU at the high school since he first joined the teaching staff at Tartan. Student Business Wraps Up with Surprising Results

Tartan High School students who launched a business last fall with the help of a local restaurant just completed their project with positive results.

Tartan High School students who launched a business last fall have some good news for their shareholders. Shareholders will in fact be getting a return on their investment.  Students who are involved in the school's marketing class and the DECA School Store partnered with D:Spot in Maplewood to launch their own business to sell chicken wings to students at school. Marketing Teacher Craig Spreiter oversaw the co-curricular project.  "The kids learned a lot and enjoyed keeping up with it, especially going through and crunching the numbers," Spreiter said after the project wrapped up.  Related: Tartan Students Launch New Business with Help from a Local Restaurant Students sold D:Spot wings out of their school store on a pre-order basis. Tartan Student Takes on High Leadership Position

A Tartan High School student received a high-ranking leadership position for SkillsUSA.

A Tartan High School student will be serving as a state officer for SkillsUSA, according to a recent release.  Maggie Mielzarek recently went through specialized training and interviewing skills to be selected as Secondary Vice-President for Minnesota SkillsUSA. She was previously chosen in December to serve as a state officer at large, but after more training moved up to a higher position.  SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization that serves teachers, high school students and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. Tartan, North High Students Excel at DECA Conference

Students recently participated in the District 2 DECA Conference in St. Paul.

Tartan High School and North High School students participated in the District 2 DECA Conference at Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul on Jan. 11. Tartan’s DECA chapter was one of the top winning chapters in the conference and had more than 90 percent of their students advance to the State Conference, which will take place March 4-6. North High School sent 55 marketing students to the conference. North High students were once again some of the top competitors. Nearly 600 students competed in 35 different marketing and business related events at the District Conference. Tartan Student Reaches the 2,000th Mark

This Tartan High School student reached a milestone in her high school basketball career.

Patch spoke with 17-year-old Ta'Kendra Elbert, a Tartan High School junior and member of the girls basketball team, who recently scored her 2,000th point this year at a game against the Winona Senior High School's Winhawks on Dec. 29.  Elbert averages 35 points per game and has scored more than 40 points on more than one occassion. She has not scored less than 30 points this season. Tartan's Concert Choir Performs Woman's Original Christmas Song

Tartan High School held its choir concert Monday night.

Tartan High School hosted its Choir Concert Monday night, featuring an original Christmas tune. Among an variety of Christmas songs, Tartan's Concert Choir performed an original Christmas song at the high school tonight. The song was written by Judith Johnson, a Grant Township resident. Tracie Hanson, who direct's the concert choir, said she connected with Johnson through the Woodbury Community Orchestra, which has played with Tartan and North High School for 16 years at the school's yearly Masterworks concerts every fall. Johnson is a reitred art and home economics teacher and a pianist.  Johnson wrote her Christmas song about her younger brother, Casey, who was stationed in Iraq.  "She was thinking of him and missing him and wanted to …

Tartan, North High Schools will Participate in Special Theatre Program

Tartan High School and North High School will be participating in the 2012-13 Spotlight Musical Theatre Program.

Tartan High School and North High School are two of 56 schools that will be participating in the 2012-13 Spotlight Musical Theatre Program, the Hennepin Theatre Trust recently announced. The group of schools selected includes five new schools and nine from the greater Minnesota. Now in its eighth year, Spotlight is one of Trust’s education initiatives, which honors, supports, provides training and advocates for Minnesota high school musical theatre students and programs.  Spotlight offers students the opportunity to work with local and national theatre educators and musical theatre professionals who offer training, insight through critical feedback and on-site school workshops.
