Oakdale’s Legislators say they Expect a State Government Shutdown

The state's last shutdown was in 2005.

Eventually Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican leadership in the state House and Senate will reach a compromise, Oakdale’s legislators said. The question is when. “It is going to take significant time and pressure to get (the Republicans) to move to the middle,” said Rep. Nora Slawik (DFL-Maplewood). The Legislature adjourned last week with no budget deal. If budget bills aren’t passed by July 1, all state government workers whose roles are deemed non-essential could be told to stay home. Slawik said a few “lights on” bills, which would put temporary measures in place to keep government operations running while a deal is negotiated, have been introduced, but they haven’t been discussed in the House Ways and Means Committee, which she…

I agree with Bill. State government has not had to deal with the financial hardships and reality that our families have had to nor have they really even considered making the difficult decisions that so many taxpayers have been unfortunately faced with in the past few years. Federal Government Shutdown Could Hamper Passport Day

The U.S. State Department can't accept passport applications if there is a government shutdown.

Washington County license centers will still extend their hours and offer discounts on passport photos on Saturday, April 9, but they might not be able to accept passport applications if there's a federal government shutdown, according to a Washington County press release. “If we are not able to accept passport applications, we will work with those customers to provide the best information that we have at the time," said Kevin Corbid, director of Department of Property Records and Taxpayer Services. For the Passport Day event, Washington County’s three license centers in Woodbury, Stillwater and Forest Lake will extend their normal business hours Saturday to 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the press release, and  passport photos will cost $…
