Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 10:15 CST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Twin Cities Politicians Say Romney Won First Presidential Debate

Looking energetic and sounding "presidential," Mitt Romney turned back President Barack Obama in the first of three debates between the two men vying for the top office in the country. Our panel of local politicos weighed in late last night.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney looked less like a "frontrunner" and more like a man on the attack Wednesday night, emerging as the winner of the first presidential debate, according to participants in the area's "Red Twin Cities" and "Blue Twin Cities" surveys, conducted by Patches around the Minneapolis and St. Paul suburbs and exurbs. The "flash" style polls were conducted just hours after the debate from Denver came to close.  Obama "missed his opporunity," according to one Democractic member of our panels. Another called him "rusty" in his first debate since winning two of the three presidential debates back in 2008.  Demcocrats were defensive of the president, not surprisingly. However, more than half of our pollsters said Mitt Romney won …

VIDEO: Jill Biden Promotes President’s, VP’s Support for Women

The vice president’s wife spoke during a campaign stop in Hopkins on Friday.

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, stopped by The Depot Coffee House in Hopkins on Friday to emphasize how her husband and President Barack Obama have supported women. “I’ve seen firsthand how Barack and Joe stand up for the rights and freedoms of women everyday,” Biden said. The “Women for Biden-Obama Grassroots Event” was part of a campaign tour through Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania over the weekend. In addition to the Hopkins stop, Biden’s Minnesota visit included events at North Hennepin Community College and Macalester College. Biden touted the Violence Against Women Act her husband drafted and helped pass in 1994 as an example of his support for women’s issues over the years. She also pointed out Obama’s signing of …

Minnesota Republicans Split over Delegation's Support of Ron Paul at RNC

Patch's panel of Twin Cities area Republicans are divided over the GOP delegation's decision to hand the majority of its votes to Ron Paul at the party's national convention.

A snap Red Twin Cities poll conducted by Patch in the wake of the Minnesota delegation's announcement to give the majority of its delegates to Ron Paul shows the state's leaders are divided by the Paul candidacy.  UPDATE: Read the complete story on the Minnesota delegation's decision  While more than 80 percent–33 out of 40–of Minnesota's delegates are behind the Paul candidacy, only 55 percent of the 29 responses Patch received showed support for that decision.  "He's not our endorsed candidate," said one of the pollsters. Nearly 21 percent disagreed strongly with the idea to give delegates to Ron Paul. About 14 percent were somewhat disagreeable to the notion.  Lake Minnetonka Patch contributor and Excelsior Republican  Marianne Stebbins…

Mr. Hodgson, The Rnc has apparently passed rules that make it harder for candidates like Ron Paul elected. You would have to research it but, I believe the comment by one idividual within that structure was, "..if you can't beat him, beat him with a stick.." How's that for democracy? I believe it's not just DC, it's the corporate/goverment structure like Eisenhower talked about. The U.S. Fruit …   more ›

Twin Cities Residents React to Mitt Romney's Visit to Lake Minnetonka

The presumed Republican nominee made his way to the Twin Cities Thursday night.

Next week, Mitt Romney will be oceanside in Tampa, FL as he attempts to earn the Republican nomination for President of the United States.  Today, however, he was lakeside at the Lafayette Club as he visited the Twin Cities for a Republican fundraiser.  His motorcade was greeted by protesters, including a busload of supporters of President Barack Obama with signs and chants.  Here's some local reaction from social media users around the Twin Cities.
