Tartan High School Relay for Life Begins Friday

The event raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Last year, Tartan High School student Jason Telin raised $500 for the local Relay for Life.

In November 2012, his grandfather was diagnosed with brain cancer. This year he has raised $1,400 for the event.

The Relay for Life of Tartan High School is set for Friday, May 17.

It’s year 11 for the event, which asks teams to walk relay-style around the track at high school in Oakdale to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

At the 10-year mark, the local Relay for Life had raised about $1 million, said Christine Telin, Jason’s mom, who serves as a chaperone.

So far this year, the 53 teams of 683 participants—mostly Tartan High School students—have raised more than $101,000. The local event is typically in the top five per capita in the nation in terms of fundraising, Telin said.

Teams will gather at Tartan High School at 5 p.m. and the event kicks off at 7 p.m.

The event is free to attend and people can watch and cheer on the teams until a fireworks display later that night. Donations to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Events and activities will be going on at the high school during the event, and they change every year, Telin said.

The closing ceremonies are set for 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

“Then we all go home and go to bed,” Telin said.
