Sen. Franken Lauds Tartan Grad on West Point Appointment

"I am very pleased that someone with Tyler's talent and drive will be attending West Point this summer," Franken said.

U.S. Sen. Al Franken recently congratulated Tyler Weaver, a Tartan High School graduate, on his appointment to West Point.

Weaver will enter the U.S. Military Academy this summer.

“I am very pleased that someone with Tyler’s talent and drive will be attending West Point this summer,” Franken said in a statement. “Each year, I nominate many impressive young people to our nation’s military academies, and Tyler was one of the few chosen for an appointment because of his hard work, character, and achievements. I am very pleased he will be one of our nation’s future leaders.”

Weaver, a Minnesota State-Mankato student, is the son of Tonya and Michael Weaver of Maplewood. He was nominated for the appointment by Franken in early 2013.

At Mankato, Tyler studied mechanical engineering, and he has also worked with Relay for Life, Feed My Starving Children and Habitat for Humanity.

Each year, Franken nominates young Minnesotans to the four U.S. service academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The individual service academies make the final admission decisions; Weaver was notified of his status this spring.
